Ten Commandments were inscribed on the stone bythe eternal carrier of information. At the same time, God personally wrote the words on the stone tablets with His finger (Exodus 31: 18). And the rest of the law was written on the scrolls by the hand of Moses (Exodus 24: 4,7).
The Bible says that the Ten Commandments were written on two tablets of stone (Exodus 32: 15; Deuteronomy 5: 22). Therefore, it is generally accepted that the first tablet contained the four commandments that reflect a person's love for God (Exodus 20:1-11), and the second tablet contained the remaining six commandments that express a person's love for other people (Exodus 20: 12-17).
The stone tablets with the Decalogue were kept in a special section of the temple, which was called the Holy of Holies, in a gold-lined ark under the wings of cherubim. Above the lid of the ark, God Himself appeared in a cloud and spoke to the people (Exodus 25: 22). And the scroll of the law was lying next to the ark (Deuteronomy 31: 26).
The Ten Commandments in the Bible are also called the Covenant (Deuteronomy 4: 13) and revelation (Exodus 32:15), which indicates the special relationship of the Lord to them.
Is keeping God's Law a guarantee of salvation?
No one is saved by keeping the commandments, but only by the atoning vicarious sacrifice of Jesus Christ offered for our sins at Calvary (Galatians 2: 16). We did not deserve this salvation, but received it freely – by the grace – kindness of God (Romans 3:24; Ephesians 2:8).
Nevertheless:
- The law plays an important role in saving a person.
- The law is intended to indicate to the person that in the eyes of God, lawlessness is sin (Romans 3:20; 1 John 3:4).
- Law as a mirror reflects our sinful condition (James 1:23-25): it depends on the Law, we can see the character flaws that distinguish us from God's ideal.
- The law is given by God solely for our own good (Ecclesiastes 12: 13; Psalm 18: 8-12).
- Those who keep the commandments will have peace of mind and the blessings of the Lord (Isaiah 48:18; Psalm 118:165).
When we look at a knitted shawl, we do not see a flaw in it. But if we take a magnifying glass, we will immediately see that in one place a moth has eaten it, and in another a thread has come loose... If you do not correct the defect in time, then the flaw will spread further. In the same way, the Law of God tells us what needs to be changed in our lives in order to avoid many troubles.
