What are the steps to get forgiveness?
- The first step to receiving forgiveness is
- to recognize your sinfulness in general (1 John 1: 8).
- To acknowledge your specific transgressions and sins (Leviticus 5: 5). To
- fully acknowledge your guilt and have a humble heart (Psalm 50: 3-5; Luke 18: 10-14)
- The second step is
- to confess to God a specific sin and repent of it (Matthew 6: 6, 12; Psalm 31:5; 129:2, 4; Acts 8: 22).
- sincere regret for what has happened and a desire to prevent the recurrence of this sin in the future (Psalm 50: 19; Acts 3: 19).
- The third step is
- to ask for forgiveness from the person who was offended, if possible, and to compensate him for the harm caused (Numbers 5:6, 7)
- The fourth step is
- accepting Christ as your only Savior from sin (1 John 2: 1-3; Acts 4:12; 10: 43).
What is the miracle of forgiveness?
- The forgiveness offered by God is complete and final (Isaiah 1: 18; 43: 25; Hebrews 8:12; 1 John 1:7, 9)
- Forgiveness is given freely (Romans 3:24; Ephesians 2:8)
- and immediately (Luke 23: 39-43)
The sinner has nothing to pay his debt with. But Christ paid for it at Calvary, and offers His merits and Sacrifice to anyone who will accept them.
As already mentioned, true repentance implies pain and regret for the sin committed, as well as the desire not to repeat this sin. It is unacceptable to make a frivolous, casually thrown confession of one's wrongness... The true awareness of one's sin is always characterized by concreteness and certainty. Some sins can only be revealed to God, while others must be acknowledged to the people who have suffered because of them.
