When did the retreat begin?
Throughout the first century, the Church remained faithful to the teachings of Christ. But even then, errors in matters of doctrine and administration began to arise in her environment. The Lord revealed to His messengers that in the future error would enter the Church (Acts 20: 29, 30; 2 Peter 2:1-3; 1 Timothy 4:1-3; 2 Timothy 4: 3,4). And so it happened. After the merger of Christianity with the state apparatus of pagan Rome, elements of pagan beliefs, foreign rituals and traditions began to penetrate into the church.
Therefore, soon the law of God lost its original meaning, giving way to the authority of the church apparatus, which introduced its own rules, commandments and foundations. This situation prevailed, according to the prophecy, for 1260 years (Daniel 7: 25; Revelation 12: 6, 14; 13:5) from 538 to 1798.
After a long period of spiritual darkness, the truth once again shone in glory, and the true gospel could be preached (Revelation 14: 6-12).
What are the characteristics of the true church?
According to the Bible, the true Church must:
- have faith in Jesus (John 14: 1; Acts 16: 31)
- carry the gospel to the world (Matthew 28: 19, 20; Acts 1:8)
- keep all the commandments of God (Revelation 12:17; 14:12; 22:14; 1 John 2:4; 5:3)
- have a visible manifestation of the spirit of prophecy (Revelation 19:10)
- be guided by the Word of God (John 17:17; 1 Timothy 3:15; 2 Timothy 3:16)
- proclaim the coming judgment (Revelation 14:7)
- preach about the imminent Second coming of Jesus Christ (Titus 2:13-15)
