Lesson 6.2. Harmony in History Al Tabari

2. Al-Tabari (838 - 923 AD)

One of the most renowned Muslim commentators is Al Tabari, and he believed that the Jews and the Christians still possessed the original Scriptures, which were given to them by Allah. He lived in the ninth century AD (about 300 years after the Qur’an was revealed). He wrote a semi-official defense of Islam while he was at Baghdad during the reign of the Abbasid Caliph Mutawakkil (847-861 AD), but at no time did he charge the Jews and the Christians of corrupting their scriptures.

“.. the first one [Scripture] which came into existence, is the Tawrat, which is in the hands of the People of the Book … the Gospel which is in the hands of the Christians, the greater part of it is the history of the Christ, His birth and His life.”

Al-Tabari (838 - 923 AD)
