Lesson 4.3. Enemies of the Book Verse 1: Surah Al-Imran 3:78

Usually six verses are presented from the Qur’an as evidence that the previous Scriptures (the Bible) were corrupted: Surat Al-‘Imran 3:78; Al-Baqarah 2:75; An-Nisa 4:46; Al-Maidah 5:13; Al-Maidah 5:41, and Al-Baqarah 2:78-79.

Which Qur’anic verses allegedly state that the previous Scriptures were changed?

“Among them is a group of those who distort the Book with their tongues, so that you would think that it is from the Book, when it is not from the Book. They say, it is from Allah, when it is not from Allah, and they knowingly tell lies about Allah.

Verse #1: Surat Al-‘Imran 3:78

What does this verse really say?

That some people “distort” the book with their tongues. That is, they change the meaning. This does not mean that they changed the actual text of the Book, but that they were sly to deceive people regarding the true contents of the Book. This was oral twisting – knowingly telling lies. This does NOT affect the text of the Book itself.
