Lesson 3.1. The Dead Sea Scrolls Corruption of the Scriptures

Can Allah not protect his own revelations from being changed? How dare they change it?

We have seen in previous studies that the Qur’an does not state that the Bible is corrupted nor that the Qur’an has come to replace the Bible; but rather the Qur’an has come to confirm and to guard the Bible. Since the Bible, according to the Qur’an, is the Word of Allah, then Allah himself must guard his own Word. That is why in the following verses it rightly states that no one can change Allah’s Word.

Rejected were the messengers before thee: with patience and constancy they bore their rejection and their wrongs, until Our aid did reach them: there is none that can alter the words (and decrees) of Allah. Already hast thou received some account of those messengers.

(Surat Al-Anam 6:34)

The word of thy Lord doth find its fulfillment in truth and in justice: None can change His words: for He is the one who heareth and knoweth all.

(Surat Al-Anam 6:115)

For them are good tidings in the worldly life and in the Hereafter. No change is there in the words of Allah. That is what is the great attainment.

(Surat Yunus 10:64)

The above three verses disqualify any claim that Allah’s Word can be changed. However, the above verse (Surat Yunus 10:64) not only states that ‘no change is there in the words of Allah’ but ‘that is what is the great attainment’ of Allah. To say it in another way, that is a great victory for Allah – it is His greatest achievement to not only reveal his Word but also protect it from change. For Allah this is his great attainment or great accomplishment. So if anyone brings an allegation that the Bible is corrupted, it is surely their view but not the Qur’anic view. They question the power of Allah by suggesting that the Bible (Allah’s revelation) is corrupt, and thus implying that He is weak or incapable of protecting his own Word. The Qur’an confirms that the previous Scriptures are revealed by Allah and the Qur’an also validates that historically up to the time of Muhammad, the Scriptures had not been corrupted. Therefore believers are advised to read the Qur’an and also read the Bible (previous Scriptures).
