Lesson 3.6. The Dead Sea Scrolls Dispute with the People of the Book

Should Muslim believers judge the People of the Book according to the Qur’anic revelation?

Not only are the previous revelations valid for the People of the Book, but as we have explored, the previous Scriptures are also valid for Muslim believers. This is why Muslim believers are instructed to follow the teachings of the Bible (the previous Scriptures) as well. Yet there are many believers and some scholars who try to dispute or argue with the People of the Book. The Qur’an does not want Muslim believers to do that, but rather to treat them with love and respect as a good believer is supposed to do.

And dispute ye not with the People of the Book, except with means better (than mere disputation), unless it be with those of them who inflict wrong (and injury): but say, “We believe in the revelation which has come down to us and in that which came down to you; Our God and your God is one; and it is to Him we bow (in Islam).”

(Surat Al-Ankabut 29:46)

Our next lesson will continue looking at this topic of “has the Bible been changed?” Next we will see specific examples of accusations made against the Bible, who made them, and what the Bible has to say for itself.
